  • FroCrowns hair on styling natural hair

However, women are now rocking the natural hairstyles loudly and proudly and there is therefore no need to conform to any arbitrary standards of what beauty is.

Black women these days adorn themselves with 1970sโ€™ hairstyles and have made them classy again. They have restored their status of regal goddess. FroCrowns has been giving women an opportunity to add this soulful grit to their natural look that adds a touch of sass. The stable is led by Warona Kenosi, a graduate of the University of Botswana in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development who is passionate about professional styling of natural kinky hair. This positions the company well, especially at a time of the great shift of women moving from so-called relaxed hair to keeping and growing their African textured hair.

Kenosi told Executive Life in an interview:

โ€œIt is our mandate to provide the best service to our esteemed clients by giving elegant, beautiful and neat kinky African textured hairstyles. Our services include bridal, corporate, pageantry, kiddies, washes, treatments and cuts.โ€

With the great shift in the beauty industry, she is delighted that people are bringing back the magic of black hair. โ€œPeople are definitely making natural hair trendy,โ€ she confirms as one in the business. โ€œIt comes from a position of choice due to different factors.

โ€œSome are now becoming aware of how to take care of their natural hair, which is something that wasnโ€™t quite there before. Others are affected by relaxers and so choose to go natural while some are going natural because they can maintain it by themselves at home. It is not only that people are riding on a trend because some are influenced by lifestyle changes and other factors and their choices are unique in their own special way.

โ€œSome people wear their natural hair all out. Some have it plaited under weaves and have it out occasionally. Some yet have it under weaves most of the time but still choose to keep it natural for different reasons among which may be the scalp not reacting well to relaxers. The point is that every hair choice is unique in its own way.โ€

Kenosi emphasised that a notable advantage of natural hair consists in it its malleability, meaning that heat can be used to achieve the straight hair look without losing the natural look back to its state after shrinkage. โ€œAlthough itโ€™s a high maintenance hair, its convenience is that there are simple steps to take care of it at home,โ€ she said.

In her view, the greatest advantage of natural hair is that is suitable for all occasions because there is an array of styles to choose from. These include casual, corporate, bridal, pageantry and cuts for both ladies and gentlemen. It is little wonder that she is receiving positive feedback for what she does and her clientele has grown and keeps growing.

โ€œThe future of FroCrowns lies in its consistency and capacity to grow the brand and seeing it in other parts of the country apart from Gaborone, as well as venturing into other streams of the hair industry,โ€ Kenosi said about her business.

7 tips of taking care of natural hair

Stick with sulphate-free shampoos:

Natural hair tends to be drier than other hair types, hence sulphate-free shampoos are advisable to use because they donโ€™t strip oils from hair strands.

Keep hair conditioned:

A conditioner is essential in order to prevent natural hair from drying, tangling up and breaking off. It is also important to keep the hair well hydrated.

Take your time with detangling:

As time consuming as the detangling process can be, it is important not to rush through it. If you donโ€™t unravel your hair diligently, you might end up with bigger knots and split ends, all of which will get in the way of hair growth. To ensure you are doing a thorough job, use a wide-tooth comb and detangle in small sections starting from the ends, working your way up to the roots. Be sure to apply a conditioner first to prevent breakage.

Get your ends trimmed regularly:

Split ends are very damaging even on natural hair because the splits will travel up the hair shaft and cause breakage and excessive shedding. It is important to visit a hair professional every three to four months to snip away knots, damaged ends and to maintain a fabulous shape.

Protect your hair before bed:

To prevent dryness and breakage, use a satin bonnet or silk pillowcase
