The Gambling Authority is leading the development of a comprehensive horse racing strategy designed to foster inclusive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for citizens. This initiative aligns with Vision 2036 and supports the government’s commitment to economic diversification and inclusive growth.
Mopati Rammekwa, Chief Operating Officer of the Gambling Authority, highlighted the transformative potential of the horse racing industry. “We view horse racing as a unique opportunity to stimulate economic activity, particularly in rural areas where equestrian culture is prevalent. By developing a strategic framework, we aim to create a sustainable ecosystem that not only supports local talent but also contributes to national priorities of inclusive growth and enhanced quality of life,” Rammekwa stated.
With the government’s ambitious goal of creating significant job opportunities, the horse racing strategy is emerging as a key component in achieving this objective. The formalisation and expansion of the industry are expected to unlock a wide range of opportunities, from horse breeding and training to event management, tourism, and betting operations.
Rammekwa explained, “The horse racing industry offers a vast value chain that includes veterinary services, horse training, race management, and hospitality. By tapping into these opportunities, we anticipate creating jobs across various sectors, thereby contributing to inclusive economic growth and ensuring that the benefits reach all corners of the country.”
The strategy is closely aligned with Vision 2036, which aims to transform Botswana into a high-income, knowledge-based economy. By diversifying into new industries such as sports and entertainment, the country seeks to reduce its dependence on traditional sectors like mining and agriculture. “This initiative reflects our commitment to Vision 2036 and the national priority of building a diversified and resilient economy. It is about fostering inclusive growth, where every Motswana has the opportunity to improve their quality of life,” Rammekwa noted.
The Gambling Authority has begun the process of bringing on board a qualified consultant to help develop the horse racing strategy. This collaborative effort will involve extensive stakeholder consultations, engaging industry experts, local horse owners, trainers, and potential investors to ensure a well-rounded and effective plan. “Our approach is deeply collaborative, involving all relevant stakeholders to ensure the strategy we develop maximises the industry’s potential. It’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem that supports local economies and enhances the quality of life for people across the country,” Rammekwa emphasised.
The horse racing industry in Botswana could soon become a significant contributor to the nation’s economic and social development. By leveraging the cultural and economic potential of horse racing, the country aims to establish itself as a regional hub for equestrian sports, attracting local and international participants and spectators. This is expected to boost tourism and related industries, aligning with the government’s focus on inclusive growth and quality living standards. “Ultimately, our goal is to build an industry that reflects the values of inclusive growth and quality of life. We believe that a well-developed horse racing strategy can play a vital role in achieving these national aspirations, creating new economic opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of our people,” Rammekwa concluded.
The Gambling Authority expects to finalise the horse racing strategy by early 2025, setting the stage for an innovative and inclusive economic pathway that promises to create lasting impacts for Botswana’s economy and its people.
