Between the introduction of the fuel levy fund in October 2004 and 31 March 2021, revenue amounting to P2.03 billon has been collected, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Peggy Serame, has told Parliament.
She was answering questions from the MP for SefhareโRamokgonami , Dr. Kesitegile Gobotswang, who wanted to know the total revenue collection since inception of the fuel levy, how it has been used since it was introduced, and if the expenditure of the Fund has been consistent with the Statutory Instrument that established it.
Minister Serame said the fuel levy fund is not among the governmentโs special funds and was not createdย through a statutory instrument.
โThese funds form part of the appropriation funds during the yearly budget, hence cannot be directly linked to any specific form of expenditure as it is appropriated in the same way as other government revenues,โ she explained .
She noted that a number of fuel levies exist and include the National Petroleum Fund (NPF), the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA), Security of Supply, as well as a road fund. The minister added that unlike the fuel levy fund, these have a specific use.
