The Gambling Authority of Botswana recently participated at a prominent industry conference named NEXT.io, held in Malta. The Authority laid out the gambling landscape in Botswana, detailed the various license types and presented an overview of the regulatory framework governing the industry in Botswana.
Presenting during a panel discussion titled ‘New Horizons – Emerging Markets and Opportunities of the Future,’ Gambling Authority Financial Planning Manager, Tshepang Magang showcased the significant advancements, challenges, and opportunities within Botswana’s gambling landscape. The presentation, delivered by Magang, covered several crucial aspects of the industry, setting the stage for future growth and responsible gaming practices.
Magang also highlighted the numerous risks associated with the gambling sector, among them addiction, financial instability among gamblers, potential for increased crime rates, and the negative social impacts on families and communities.
“There is need for a comprehensive approach to tackle these issues effectively. To mitigate these risks, Botswana has adopted and implemented several strategies to ensure a balanced and secure gambling environment,” said Magang.
He explained that Botswana put in place a strict regulatory framework to govern the operation of gambling establishments. This includes licensing requirements, regular audits, and compliance checks to ensure that operators adhere to legal and ethical standards.
“We also launched extensive public awareness campaigns, entailing radio, television, print, and new media, to educate citizens about the risks associated with gambling. These campaigns aim to promote responsible gambling practices and provide information on how to seek help for gambling-related problems,” he added.
Further, said Magang, the Gambling Authority of Botswana created robust support systems for individuals affected by gambling addiction. This includes accessible and free counseling services, a 24/7 helpline, as well as rehabilitation programs designed to assist individuals in overcoming their addiction and regaining control of their lives.
Stringent monitoring and enforcement mechanisms were put in place to detect and prevent illegal and underage gambling activities. This involves collaboration with law enforcement agencies to crack down on unlicensed operators and protect consumers from fraudulent practices.
Other interventions include implementation of Socio-Economic Measures such as self and third-party exclusion programs, and ensuring that gambling revenues are reinvested into the economy.
Magang stressed that these mitigation strategies are essential for creating a safe and responsible gambling environment in Botswana. By addressing the challenges head-on and implementing effective measures, the aim is to protect individuals and communities while allowing the gambling sector to contribute positively to the economy. One of the key highlights of the presentation was the Introduction of the Central Electronic Monitoring System (CEMS) which will ensure transparency and fairness in the gambling industry, in addition to proper accounting for government revenue from betting and limited payout machines operators. This system represents a significant technological advancement aimed at enhancing the monitoring and regulation of gambling activities across the country.
The Gambling Authority’s commitment to responsible gaming was also a major point of discussion. The presentation showcased the Authority’s ongoing efforts in promoting gambling awareness and educational campaigns. A notable achievement in this regard is the recent launch of the self-help portal, designed to provide support and resources for individuals struggling with gambling-related issues.
Additionally, the Authority has undertaken a baseline survey to assess the prevalence of problem gambling in Botswana. This survey continues to provide critical data to inform policies and interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of problem gambling.
The presentation also celebrated a milestone achievement of reaching 100 villages with the “Motshameko O Phepa” campaign within the fiscal year 2023/2024. This initiative underscores the Authority’s dedication to promoting clean and responsible gambling practices across the country.
Training for operator and casino employees, funded through the Responsible Gambling Contributions, was another key area covered. This training ensures that industry employees are well-equipped to foster a safe and responsible gambling environment.
In conclusion, Magang highlighted the role of operators as the main stakeholders in the regulatory framework. The presentation demonstrated how regulators actively involve operators, showcasing the significant potential and opportunities for investment in Africa’s burgeoning gambling sector.
The Botswana Gambling Authority is committed to regulating the gambling industry to ensure fair and responsible gambling practices. Through comprehensive regulations, innovative monitoring systems, and ongoing educational campaigns, the Authority aims to create a safe and thriving gambling environment for all.
