In the heart of Botswana’s stunning Chobe National Park, a revolution in sustainable tourism is underway. Chobe Game Lodge has embarked on an ambitious journey to electrify its game viewing fleet, led by visionary management driving the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the tourism sector.
A decade of innovation
Chobe Game Lodge Director Johan Bruwer says the lodge’s e-mobility journey began over a decade ago, with the conversion of internal combustion game viewers to electric.
Despite early challenges, the team persevered, driven by a commitment to innovation and sustainability. Today, Chobe Game Lodge is a leader in electric game viewing, offering guests a unique and immersive safari experience powered by electric vehicles.
New generation of electric safari vehicles
Bruwer notes that the latest addition to the fleet is a state-of-the-art electric safari vehicle, designed and built by Tula Solutions, a South African company specialising in electric vehicle technology.
The vehicle marks a significant milestone in electric game viewing, providing a range of benefits that enhance the safari experience.
Features and benefits
The electric safari vehicle comes with a 60kWh battery pack, giving it a range of up to 180km on a single charge. It is equipped with two electric motors—one on the front axle and one on the rear—delivering a combined 300kW of power and 620Nm of torque.
The vehicle also features independent suspension on all four wheels for a smooth, comfortable ride, along with an advanced software suite that provides real-time telemetry data and driver behavior analysis.
Chobe’s sustainable tourism in action
Bruwer says the adoption of electric vehicles demonstrates the lodge’s commitment to sustainable tourism. By reducing its carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices, Chobe Game Lodge is setting a new standard for responsible tourism in Africa.
“As the tourism industry evolves, electric vehicles have the potential to revolutionize African safaris,” Bruwer said. “By embracing sustainability and reducing our environmental impact, we can ensure future generations enjoy the beauty of Africa’s wildlife.”
Chobe has so far purchased one Tula electric 4×4, expected to arrive in March next year, with plans to acquire eight more. The lodge’s initiative exemplifies innovation and sustainability, positioning Chobe Game Lodge as a leader in the future of safari tourism in Africa.
