Botswana is drawing down from an existing P97 million emergency response fund to avert a potential outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) following formal alerts from South Africa and Zimbabwe, where active cases have been detected close to the country’s borders.
Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture David Tshere said the government has approved the immediate implementation of a national FMD response plan, citing the scale of the threat and the potentially severe economic impact on the livestock sector.
